THE university has surely come a long way from a hole in the wall to what it is today.

Only recently, the university garnered some accolades including a top 3 in the Licensure Exam for Teachers which brought a lot of cheers for many as we did not see it coming. Or maybe I did not. But what made it even better was for our top 3 to deliver the message during oath taking exercises.

What was expected was that of the Dental Board Exams, where 2 graduates placed in the Top 10, and the usual 100% passing rate among those who took the exams, now all dentists. In Dentistry, UB finds itself among the Top 3 in the national level. Probably the only dental school with Level 4 accreditation in the whole country.

Previously it was Medical Technology and Accountancy that was placing in the Top 10 a couple of years back and consistently. Top 3 in the Accounting Board Exams just a few years back. Architects and Engineers here and there. Then there is also Criminology, 1 student in the Top 3, at number 2. Plus many more in the Top 10 many times more the past years.

Then there’s the School of International Hotel and Tourism Management, my baby, so allow me to be a little more biased. Well it is just that when the words “consistency” and “continuing” are involved, I would say that, this school has it.

Thanks also to a dynamic school dean and her faculty. Not to mention camaraderie amongst everyone, especially its studentry. My baby because I was a pioneer in the establishment of the school, independent from any other. This was in 1993. Walang kokontra! I’m not kidding.

We started it with Lola Rosing who later on became its first Dean. I did teach from 1993 to 2007. I remember too that nutrition was also part of the school before it was replaced with Tourism Management. Well as everyone would know and until today they have continuously held on to the title in all school category competitions here and in the national.

Our Tourism Department has in fact hosted 4 previously held National Skills Competitions also in UB. Let’s not forget about beauty titles, maybe for another story.

The university only recently opened with a School of Music. The university choir, UB Voices, participated and performed in a national competition but missed out on being number 1 and ended up as number 2.

Previous before this they were number 1 in an international competition. We now have a University Orchestra for the first time. And in sports we are now number 1 for men and women’s volleyball! A feat difficult to achieve with UC for the men and SLU for women most of the time.

For basketball men it is always a given so enough that. The PH Boxing Team call UB their home. In the last SEA Games, each one brought home a medal 10 for 10. Five gold medals 3 silver and 2 bronze. Our new graduate in Haridas Pascual is now gunning for his GM, not 1, not 2, but 3. UB’s only chess Grand Master. Almost all of the PH Team in Taekwondo are from UB.

Medals in athletics in SEA Games are coming from students of UB.

With the exit of my Ading JB, we will welcome with open arms, Ate Ynna. The eldest from Generation 3. Top 1 among us, in age, hehe. I am in the Top 5 at number 5. Tama na because it is not about me now.

Ate Ynna for just this short time will immediately have under her cap a new building which as of this moment is already being constructed.

Finally also, the oldest building left to date, previously AS Building and now High School Building has been renovated after so long. Please don’t get me wrong here by saying that my brother JB hasn’t anything to cap from his stint as head of UB.

In fact all that I mentioned in this story is all of him. Things have started on right footing from the transition, from my Ading to now my Ate. Things are looking so bright for UB today. At 67 all seems well and 68 just seems so near. It’s all up here. It’s all tops here.
