Buss said he is most proud of the community service aspect of Hwa Rang Do in Madison. He and other local instructors run 10 youth programs at local schools through the Madison School District and Madison School & Community Recreation.

They also hold community and women’s self-defense events and bully prevention, often partnering with local Girl Scout troops. Buss also runs adaptive programs for special-needs students, some of whom competed Saturday.“We have a really robust curriculum and passionate and caring instructors,” he said. “People in all different places in life are able to experience the positive benefits of martial arts training.”

Hwa Rang Do — the Korean words mean “the way of the Flowering Manhood” — has more than 4,000 techniques, and Buss estimates he knows about 3,000 of them.

Grandmaster Lee has an eighth-degree black sash, or black belt, and said he knows all 4,000 techniques.

“It’s all about maintaining balance,” Lee said. “It’s the most comprehensive martial art in the world.”

He calls it a “healing art” as well as a martial art. “If you can hurt, you should also be able to save lives.”
