As mentioned, hard armor is a system of ceramic or metal plates. Soft armor, on the other hand, is a cloth-like material designed to capture a bullet and dissipate the impact force through a netting material across the entire surface of the armor. The most common example of soft body armor is the modern bullet proof vest worn by most police officers, either beneath or over their clothing. Hard armor is cumbersome and heavy. Even ceramic plates, which are far lighter than their metallic counterparts, can be heavy if a full suit of armor is worn. Ceramic plates generally weigh close to six pounds each. It is also bulky, and makes doing things like driving difficult, which is why officers only wear it when there is a specific threat that needs to be protected against (such as during riot protection and similar actions).

Medieval II: Total War (which we will call MTWII for the rest of the article) is a great place to look at some historical armor. It is the latest game from the Creative Assembly so the graphics are top notch and you are able to see with pretty good detail what soldiers wore back in the medieval ages. For example, playing as the French faction in the game, you’ll eventually get a whole host of knights are your disposal. Knights are the primary example where most of the suits of armors in castles and in today’s homes are found. Why? Because they were often the most heavily armored to serve as shock troops and to bust through hard lined defenses. Once you get so far in the game, you can see about 5 different types of armor that the knights wore. They include a Gothic style armor and a Milanese type of armor. They also have the standard crusader and sugar loaf type of armor.

The medieval era was undoubtedly very different from today. Still, the influence of this era can be witnessed on the people of today’s scenario also. The acceptance of the clothing of the medieval era is the perfect example in this context. Moreover, a number of individuals also have the interests in keeping the medieval accessories today.

For concealment and protection, there really is no alternative to wearing a good concealable vest. Standard body armor might offer better protection from higher powered firearms, but this style of vest does an excellent job of protecting against the most common threats to those who usually find a need for this type of armor. Vests and suits of armor worn outside the clothing can offer more protection, but they can not be hidden underneath your clothing, and this makes them poor solutions for any situation where maintaining an “ordinary” appearance is important.
