But Taekwondo is very different from many oriental martial arts. First, physically it is very dynamic with active movements that include a variety of foot skills. Second, the principle physical movements are in coordination and in tempo with that of the mind and life as a whole. Third, it possesses dynamic poses from another perspective.

Training in Tae Kwon Do involves learning kicking, punching and blocking in various combinations of traditional sets known as hyung. As students improve their hyung, they receive different belts, with a black belt being the highest level. However, Tae Kwon Do (as with all martial arts) isn’t used as a way to beat the crap out of someone you don’t like. It’s a form of self-defense that involves strict mental and physical training and strong moral character.

Tae Kwon Do – History

Tae Kwon Do has been around for over 2,000 years. This martial arts discipline is believed to have been founded in Korea by Hwarang warriors who developed Tae Kwon Do as a way to defend themselves from the invading armies of Japan. The guiding principles of the Hwarang warriors were loyalty, duty, trustworthiness, valor and justice.
