Most people will have heard of Robin Hood and will know that he is famed for his ability as an archer. For the beginner looking to take up archery today, you will no doubt have at least a faint desire to emulate the mythical hero when on the target range. In order to do this however, you will need to ensure that your technique in firing an arrow is perfect if you hope to achieve the same high standards of accuracy that Robin Hood was believed to have possessed.

There are a lot of archery lessons available out there. They can come in the form of e-books, articles or blog posts, videos, physical books, etc. Which type of archery lessons best suit your needs is mainly dependent upon your preferences. Some people like more to read while others like to watch their lessons. Some people also like to listen to the lessons while they’re practicing so they can always be aware of the proper technique.

Give yourself time to master the bow before making an upgrade. As previously mentioned above, avoid making the jump up to higher quality bows or adding on additional accessories like scopes, sights, etc. until you have mastered basic bow shooting. The belief may be that these other items may help your performance, but unless you master the basics straight away, any gains made will evaporate very quickly. Practice on the basics first and in a year’s time, you should be ready for an upgrade.

The next step in how to make a bow and arrow is stringing the bow. The hemp string to be used must be shorter than the bow itself, so as to give the bow the tension needed to propel the arrow. A loop must be made on each end of the bowstring; the size of the loops must be enough to fit firmly on the notches made on both ends of the bow. One will need to use one’s foot for leverage to force the bow into a curve in order to easily fasten the bowstring around each end.

In 1878 the National Archery Association of the United States was formed. This is the ruling body for target archers in the United States. A group of target archers conduct a tournament in a manner similar to that used on the rifle range. Shooting is under the control of a Field Captain and the targets are set at predetermined distances from the shooting line.
